About Manchester Art Gallery
Founded in 1823 as the Royal Manchester Institution, the gallery moved into Charles Barry's neoclassical building on Mosley Street in 1835. It became a free public museum in 1882.
The collection's nineteenth-century holdings — Holman Hunt, Madox Brown, Rossetti, and Burne-Jones — are among the finest anywhere, alongside strong Dutch and Flemish, decorative-arts, and contemporary collections.
