David
Quick Answer
David is a marble sculpture by Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo, carved between 1501 and 1504 from a single block of Carrara marble. At 517 cm (17 ft) tall, it depicts the biblical hero David in the moment before his battle with Goliath — not triumphant afterward, but tensed and contemplative, sling in hand. It is displayed in the Tribuna of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy, and is considered the greatest sculpture of the Renaissance.

"The greatest single sculpture of the Renaissance — carved from a block of marble two other sculptors had abandoned"
History & Story
The block of marble from which Michelangelo carved David had been sitting in a Florence workshop for over 25 years, abandoned after two earlier sculptors had attempted and failed to work with it. Michelangelo was commissioned by the Opera del Duomo of Florence in 1501, aged 26, and completed the work in 1504. The block had been stored outside and was known as 'the Giant.'
When the work was complete, a committee of leading Florentine artists — including Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli — convened to decide where to place it. They chose the Piazza della Signoria, the civic heart of Florence, rather than the cathedral as originally intended, making David a symbol of the Florentine Republic's political independence. A full-scale replica now stands in its original outdoor position.
Why It Matters
Michelangelo's David departs from all previous depictions of the subject: earlier Davids (Donatello's, Verrocchio's) showed him triumphant after the battle, with Goliath's severed head at his feet. Michelangelo chose the moment of anticipation — David's eyes look toward his enemy, his body is tensed but still, and the famous slight twist of the torso (contrapposto) creates a coiled energy. This psychological realism — the hero shown thinking rather than triumphant — was a revolutionary shift.
