The Garden of Earthly Delights
Quick Answer
The Garden of Earthly Delights is a triptych oil painting by Early Netherlandish artist Hieronymus Bosch, created between approximately 1490 and 1510. The left panel depicts the Garden of Eden with Adam, Eve, and animals. The central panel shows a densely populated scene of human pleasures, including nude figures, giant fruit, and fantastical creatures. The right panel depicts Hell as a nightmarish landscape of torture and demonic punishment. The work is in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.

"The most debated, most mysterious, most nightmarish painting in Western art — and no one knows what it means"
History & Story
The triptych was commissioned by Henry III of Nassau around 1490–1500, and its purpose and meaning have been debated ever since. It is known to have been in the Palace of Nassau in Brussels in 1517, when Antonio de Beatis saw it and described it. In 1568 it was acquired by Philip II of Spain, who brought it to El Escorial and then the Prado.
No documentary evidence survives of Bosch's intentions. Scholars have proposed that it is a moralising warning against sin; a Cathar or Adamite heretical vision of a sin-free prelapsarian paradise; an illustrated dream; or simply an extraordinarily imaginative depiction of existing literary and theological imagery of the late medieval period. The debate continues.
Why It Matters
Bosch created an imagery system of fantastical, hybrid creatures and surreal scenes that has no parallel in medieval or Renaissance art. The central panel — enormous in scale, with hundreds of nude figures engaged in activities ranging from the playful to the explicitly transgressive — has fascinated observers for 500 years. Surrealists including Dalí and Ernst cited Bosch as a precursor. His imagery is so strange that it appears modern rather than medieval.
