History & Story

Kahlo painted The Two Fridas in 1939, immediately after her divorce from muralist Diego Rivera (they had been married since 1929 and divorced in 1939, though they remarried in 1940). The two self-portraits represent different aspects of her dual identity: the European Frida (in Victorian dress, recalling her Spanish-German heritage) and the Mexican Frida (in Tehuana dress, her indigenous Mexican identity that Rivera loved).

The painting was first exhibited at the 1940 International Surrealism Exhibition in Mexico City. Though Kahlo objected to being classified as a Surrealist — she said: 'I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality' — André Breton and other Surrealists championed her work. The Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City acquired The Two Fridas in 1943.
