The Night Watch
Quick Answer
The Night Watch is a large oil painting by Dutch Golden Age artist Rembrandt van Rijn, completed in 1642. It depicts a group portrait of a company of Amsterdam militia (city guards) led by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and his lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch. The painting is the centrepiece of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and is one of the most celebrated examples of Dutch Golden Age painting. Despite its name, it depicts a daytime scene — the "night" in the title is a later misidentification caused by centuries of darkened varnish.

"The centrepiece of Dutch Golden Age painting — a militia portrait unlike any seen before or since"
History & Story
Rembrandt was commissioned in 1640–1642 by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq to paint a group portrait of his Amsterdam civic guard company. Rather than the conventional stiff, formal group portrait of the period — all heads the same size, arranged in rows — Rembrandt created a scene of dynamic movement, with figures emerging from shadow into torchlight and the company apparently preparing to march out.
The painting was trimmed on all four sides at some point in the late 17th or early 18th century to fit a smaller space in Amsterdam's Town Hall — a significant loss including two figures on the left. It was not called "The Night Watch" until the 19th century, when centuries of yellowed varnish made it appear to depict a night scene. Cleaning in the 1940s revealed the daylight, but the name had already become fixed.
Why It Matters
The Night Watch is unique among Dutch group portraits in its theatrical drama, its dramatic use of chiaroscuro, and its refusal to give equal prominence to all the paying subjects. Some militia members complained that they were obscured in shadow — they had each paid between 100 and 1,200 guilders to appear. Rembrandt subordinated conventional patron-pleasing to artistic vision, a choice that damaged his commercial career but produced his greatest work.
