History & Story

Friedrich painted the Wanderer around 1818, during the height of the German Romantic movement. The figure's identity is debated — Friedrich often used his own likeness for his solitary figures, but this one has also been proposed to be Colonel Friedrich Gotthard von Brincken, a Saxon military officer who died in 1813. The landscape is the Giant Mountains (Riesengebirge) on the border of modern Germany and Czech Republic.

Friedrich's technique of placing a Rückenfigur (back-turned figure) in front of an immense natural scene — so that the viewer identifies with the figure and looks outward through his eyes — was deeply influential on later Romantic and Symbolist art. The fog-filled landscape below invites the viewer to project their own imagination into the formless void.
