History & Story

Constable painted The Hay Wain at his studio in London in 1821, working from sketches and oil studies he had made on location at the Stour valley in Suffolk, where he grew up. He exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1821 under the title Landscape: Noon. It attracted respectful attention in London but did not sell. When it was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824, it caused a sensation — French artists including Delacroix were astonished by its naturalism and sky painting.

The French response transformed Constable's reputation. He received a gold medal from King Charles X of France. Delacroix reportedly repainted sections of his own Massacre at Chios in the week after seeing Constable's work at the Salon. The National Gallery acquired The Hay Wain in 1886.

Why It Matters

Constable was the first artist to study cloud formations systematically as scientific phenomena, making extensive oil sketches of the sky over Hampstead Heath and recording precise meteorological conditions. His insistence that landscape painting should capture actual atmospheric conditions — rather than the idealised, Italianate landscapes of Claude Lorrain — was genuinely radical. His technique of applying small flecks of white paint ('Constable's snow') to represent light on leaves directly influenced Barbizon School painters and, through them, the Impressionists.
