History & Story

Primavera was probably commissioned for the Villa di Castello of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, a cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent. It is usually dated to around 1477–1482. Art historian Giorgio Vasari saw it at Castello in the 16th century and described it as depicting Venus with a group of Graces.

The painting was moved to the Uffizi in 1815 and has been there ever since. Over 500 interpretations of its iconographic programme have been proposed, ranging from a Neoplatonist allegory of the soul's ascent through stages of love, to a straightforward celebration of spring and nature, to a complex political allegory of the Medici family's position in Florence.

Primavera is, alongside the Birth of Venus, the clearest demonstration of Botticelli's ability to blend classical mythology with the Florentine Neoplatonist philosophy promoted by Marsilio Ficino at the Medici court. The paintings reveal a Florence that was simultaneously deeply Christian and passionately engaged in recovering and reinterpreting the pagan classical world — treating ancient mythology as a poetic language for truths about love, beauty, and the soul.
